Here and Gone
AUTHORS NOTE:
Written in 2018 or 2019, the saved date is wrong and I don't remember. This one was another assignment where we drew three topics from a hat and I think mine was along the lines of pancake, love, and break up? it was a long time ago...
Here and Gone
The rhythm of the vibration of the air ducts,
Slowly humming a song of their own.
He is there,
Sitting in a slumped state,
Deep in his own thoughts.
He looks down at his plate,
The steamy, golden-brown pancake, is looking back.
He fixes it up with butter and syrup,
Then carefully cuts the first bite.
He is hesitant at first,
Nervous he might mess it up,
Or excited for the new taste.
He puts it in his mouth and savors it.
The flavor instantly grabs him,
Pulling him into its world.
He enjoys the brightness it gives him,
Warm and happy feelings that come with it.
He is almost done with half of it now,
The warm and fuzzy feelings are fading,
The new, flavorful, taste is becoming bland,
Nonetheless, he continues.
He doesn't admit that he wants to stop eating it.
Using the syrup to make them stick,
he adds some blueberries on top.
Stopping for a short moment,
He takes in the sight of this new creation,
Then takes his next bite.
The flavor caresses him,
Taking him back to the place he loved,
The place that filled him with warmth and hope,
And the wonders of the world that pulls him in.
He opens his eyes,
The heaven before him is now gone,
He yearns to have it back and wished he could have enjoyed it more.
The sudden emptiness of the plate seeps into him,
Filling him with the same darkness.
He thinks back to when he tasted it,
And it reminds him of what he had,
And of what he lost.
He realizes,
It was here,
And now it's gone.
Never will there be one exactly like the other,
Forever flowing into imagination,
Of what one used to be.
Here it was, and now it's gone.
