The Wrong Waldo

 AUTHORS NOTE:

Written in 2019. This one is pretty creepy so if you don't like that kind of stuff, I suggest you skip this one. I wrote this twist based on the Where's Waldo book. It was really fun to write.

The Wrong Waldo

Clancy Tresemer

He noticed right away that something was off. Calin searched all over the house but couldn’t find it. He didn’t remember anything. The whole house was empty and the yard was quiet. Calin was confused about what was wrong.

He grabbed his coat then his keys and drove away from the dead house. The neighborhoods were completely empty as he slowly drove along, looking left to right, searching. There was no clarity in anything he spotted.

A leaf rolled into the wind as it took flight. Calin drove until he reached the center of town. The wind blew hard and whispered to something as it squirmed through the buildings. There was still nothing around for miles that reminded him of the past. He got out of the car and walked around the little stores, looking inside windows for something. Anything.

Calin felt like giving up but something inside of him made him keep looking. He searched through garbage cans, rain gutters, the main fountains in the center, the back door windows, rooftops, and mailboxes. There was nothing.

Calin walked back to his car and continued to drive to the more suburban areas. Fields and Fields of plants that looked identical to grass, lined the road for what seemed like miles. Calin decided not to go too far away from his birthplace so he circled back around.

Through the town square, through the empty neighborhoods and back into his driveway. Something felt very off. Then it hit him. Calin realized that there was no other person in the whole town. Where was everyone? He took a deep breath and walked back into his house. There was a note on the refrigerator that he noticed when he walked in the door.

The note read, “Pick up. Waldo.” Calin was even more confused now.

Who was Waldo? There was no indication of what Calin was supposed to do. He sat in a big leather chair in the living room and thought for a long time. The harder he tried to remember things, the more he forgot.

There was no explanation of why he was all alone. He walked into the kitchen to get a glass of water. As he was about to fill the cup up from the sink, His vision blurred and became black.

By the time he woke up again, he looked around and found that he was laying in the grass. Calin was in his backyard. But how did he end up here? He could never remember. He walked through his house and out the door in a frustrated motion.

Calin stomped his way into the middle of the street and looked both ways. There was nothing. He turned to go back inside when he heard breathing behind him. Calin slowly turned around to see a tall, skinny figure. The figure was wearing a red and white cap with a matching shirt and dark black pants. Its face was torn and ugly. There was dried blood covering the cuts and bruises.

Calin stammered, “Where is Waldo?”

The figure looked through his eyes and into his soul when he spoke.

“Right in front of you, Calin!” The voice startled Calin as it was dark and groggy.

Waldo laughed a wicked cackle and took a step forward. Calin darted to his car and started the engine as Waldo moved closer slowly. Waldo had a big grin that illuminated the injuries on his body. Calin reversed and turned the wheel to leave the neighborhood. Suddenly the car sunk. The wheels had been flattened and Waldo was standing right outside the car door. Calin got out and tried to run. Waldo grabbed him and the next thing Calin saw was black.

A light burned his eyes as he screamed and shot up straight. A woman, his wife, was consoling him ferociously.

He calmed down from his sweat and coughed in nice air. “Calin, are you alright? What happened?” his wife asked.

He replied, “I’m not even touching a Waldo book again.”  They laughed and three tiny children ran in and jumped into the bed with them.

While enjoying the moment, they didn’t notice a figure outside their window watching. Waldo laughed and faded into the shadows.
