The Lucky Koala

 AUTHORS NOTE:

Written in 2019. I had to write a poem for school that was about a current issue. This one is about the Australian fires that happened that school year and how an animal would feel in that situation.

The Lucky Koala

I crawl towards my breakfast and bask in the sun

The leaves felt soft on my teeth as I bit into them

Warmth baked into my grey fur

I watched the clouds where I sit

The wind ruffled the tree and my ears

September was always peaceful

I finished my food and heard an odd sound

I turned around on the tree branch

The sky was filled with blood and darkness

Startled, I perked up from my snug posture

Along the horizon, there were flicks of light

The air around me grew thick

My lungs were getting heavy

Something was wrong on this day

Something was different this time of year

The heats were hotter

The land was dryer

I tried to ignore the ignorant destroyer

While it took out humans and their homes

I tried not to think about my friends

While they were suffering and losing safety

Some of them might be okay

They are farther north which is miles away

A strange heat surged around me

It was getting harder to breathe

I went to hide in my tree, my home

The world turned black

I started to think that it was the last time

That I would be on this earth

Suddenly, my world brightened

As hands reached in for me to lift me from the heat

The ash on my bear fur changed my appearance

A man held me with yellow and red cloth

Water poured on my home and onto the destroyer

The orange heat was no match

I watched my home fall into its mouth

Fear filled me

The unknown was frightening

At least I am safe now

I wish my friends well but I am off to a better place

A place with great care and hope

One I can gather strength in

One day I will return to you, my dear home

Until then hold strong

Don’t let the fire take your strength

I hope it will all be over soon
