Allusion Poem/ If You'd Only Listen
AUTHORS NOTE:
This was written in 2020. It was an assignment for a writing class that asked you to pick a song and write a poem to answer or respond to what the song was about.
In this poem I am responding to the song/poem:
Listen Before I Go, by Billie Eilish
Take me to the rooftop
I wanna see the world when I stop breathing, turning blue
Tell me love is endless, don't be so pretentious
Leave me like you do
If you need me, wanna see me
Better hurry 'cause I'm leaving soon
Sorry can't save me now
Sorry I don't know how
Sorry there's no way out (sorry)
But down
Hmm, down
Taste me, these salty tears on my cheeks
That's what a year-long headache does to you
I'm not okay, I feel so scattered
Don't say I'm all that matters
Leave me, déjà vu
If you need me, wanna see me
You better hurry, I'm leaving soon
Sorry can't save me now (sorry)
Sorry I don't know how (sorry)
Sorry there's no way out (sorry)
But down
Hmm, down
Call my friends and tell them that I love them
And I'll miss them
But I'm not sorry
Call my friends and tell them that I love them
And I'll miss them
Sorry
my poem response
If You’d Only Listen
Step down from the ledge you’re standing on,
As the world spins it sometimes feels like its ending,
But I promise from the white tulips in the morning,
To the floating curves of death on the ground,
That you are always safe in the vast sheets of warmth.
I can only hurry as much as you wait,
For I am the only one that can’t be too late,
You won’t allow me any more ticking seconds on the wall,
I hope to make it before you decide to fall.
You may think that the pesky people in this world won’t cherish you,
Until you make them,
But they celebrate you already,
You just can’t see it from your invisible veil,
Since the grey cloud around you blocks your view.
Saying sorry won’t heal the broken fragments,
Of the place that has full love for you,
You say sorry without the truth,
How could I ever believe you?
If you’d only listen,
You wouldn’t jump and turn blue,
There would be people surrounding you,
Your friends won’t be the same,
So there I rest your question in the air,
Hoping that you would see what you’d miss,
If you weren't here.
I’m begging you to listen,
Even when you haven’t before,
To stay here with us,
But you don’t listen,
And I will always wish,
That you would have.
