Jump into the Scene
AUTHOR NOTES:
Written in 2022. For an assignment, I had to create a scenario for the reader to jump into. It is supposed to be descriptive enough to portray the entire scene. I was going to write an entire story on it but I haven't yet.
Susan stormed through the hall and turned the corner to the living room.
“You can’t possibly think that I would be willing to listen to your excuses after everything that’s happened, Johnathan!”
Susan spoke loud enough for him to hear it, but with a chill that usually comes with shouting.
“Please, Susan, you need to hear me out,” Jonathan replied as he joined Susan in the living room where she was pretending to straighten up the couch cushions, “I had no idea that Nick was planning it. He never told me anything!” Jonathan’s pitch started to rise as he pleaded to her. Susan didn’t stop to face him.
“It doesn’t matter whether you did anything physically or not, it’s the fact that you were friends with him for years and couldn’t see the red flags! Or maybe you even chose not to see them.” Susan’s voice started to rise and sound irritable. Jonathan watched her sweep around the room, moving things one way than moving them back.
“You know that is impossible. I would have shut him out if I knew, or even turned him in if I had to! I’m not an ignorant doormat, Susan!” Jonathan matched her tone and flailed his arms to express his point. Susan stopped and turned toward him, resting a hand on her head.
“I can’t do this anymore Jonathan. You must respect that and just go.” Susan dropped her voice, almost to a whisper as she replied. They stood in silence for a few minutes. Finally, Jonathan was the one to break it. He spoke to Susan with a cracking voice as he was on the verge of tears.
“Susan. I love you. I have ever since we went to the street fair for our first date, or even before that when our parents used to set up study dates. It was always you.”
“You love me? You love me. Sure,” Susan started to raise her voice, frustratingly, “if you really loved me, Jonathan, you would have told me that your closest friend was the one that killed, not only my parents but hundreds of innocent people in that charity event!”
Susan was beyond angry and felt red hot. She crossed her arms as she stared at Jonathan, hoping she could pierce his soul and make him feel her despise. She was hurt. A wound so big and deep as this one would take a lot of time to heal back together. Tears started rolling down her cheeks.
“Fine. If you won’t hear me out,” Jonathan said quietly, dropping his hands to his side, “just hear this. I had no idea what Nick was planning. I had no intention of hiding this from you. I had no hidden plan to ruin your life. I just didn’t want to make those feelings resurface. You were doing so well.”
Susan looked away and kept quiet. Jonathan sighed at her reaction to his summary of the truth.
“When you’re ready to talk, you know how to find me.”
Jonathan wiped his hands on his jeans and then into his pockets, waiting a little bit longer in case she wanted to say something. He nodded after she stayed silent, unable to look at him. He slowly walked down the hall and out her front door. Susan didn’t move until she heard his car start and drive out of earshot. Susan felt the tears, hatred, regret, and loss, rise from her stomach to her face. She started to shake with each breath-like cough, causing her to cry harder. She fell to the floor as she covered her face with her hands. She sunk into the feeling instead of pushing it back down like always. Susan stayed on the floor for the next several hours. When the crying finally stopped, Susan got up and walked to her bedroom. She pulled back the sheets and crawled in. She didn’t have enough energy left to even take off her clothes or shoes. She fell asleep quickly and dreamed that her parents were still alive, helping her pick out flowers.
