The Dream of Drifting Away
The Dream of Drifting Away

She walked through her house, her feet cold as each step were coated with cool water, like she was walking on ice. Feeling her muscles pull and push, like her skin was ripping apart and joining back together again. Sitting down, the soft wood was accepting; ready for her to slide across it effortlessly. Her brain was prepared to put the pieces together. To make her fingers move in sync with the hard, marble-like texture on each of the small rectangular pedals. Peacefully her fingers rested upon the five different pedals, ready for permission to let go. Ready to begin when her soul opened up and released its tension. So, she was finally ready. Ready to unleash all of her worries, her sorrows and her pain. Inhaling, exhaling. Deep breaths to steady her heart. She started to play; her fingers sparking to life with each note. Her body and muscles are lulled to relaxation, flowing with every chord played perfectly in tune. Resting, laying lifeless in the arms of no one but the music flowing from the vibrating wires, as each pedal was struck in time with the rhythm. The fast moving world seemed to slow. Stopping, freezing in time, with every chord perfect. The sound of the rain, tapping at the window, slid slower down the window in order to watch and listen. Eventually coming to a complete stop with more and more drops joining in to hear the magical song. As she leans backward, arching her back, a spark of light coming from her heart emits with sparkling fire. It gets brighter as the song progresses. Who knew something so beautiful could come, from a bunch of wires being hit, out of a wooden box? She swayed with emotion. Her every heart beat was in sync with the melody. The stress, the worry, the hopelessness and the hesitation were compromised as the sparks of fire flooded her soul, turning them into realization. A realization that everything will be okay. The last note was hit as the quietness of the empty house soaked into the space that was once filled with noise. Her lifeless body could barely stand, walking to her bed where she would drift off to sleep.
The night sky finally awoke to light up the night life of the island. As the wind howls and cries angrily through the trees. From where she was standing, she could only feel the wind on her skin. The rush of it as the gravity was simply fading away. Trying to lift her away, the wind tugged at her clothes and hair. She could almost let go of herself and drift out of existence. Stepping out of her shoes, her feet met the soft cushion beneath her. Almost scraping and cutting her feet as the tiny sharp objects in the soft mixture rubbed against her feet with each step. The rigid cloud under her smoothed out as she walked toward the creator of the endless substance. As the cold body of wetness breathed in and out, making the sound that a young mother makes when trying to calm and quiet a newborn baby, it kissed her toes so effortlessly. It was impossible to resist it. The salting, smelling body inhaled once more; calling to her to pull her into the vast forever. Slowly, one foot at a time, she waded into the water. The sensation so alluring. Her warm body turned cold as the water washed over her calves, then her thighs. As the waves crash against the now far away shore, the hushing quiets her. She is unable to scream, to yell, to breathe. She is completely submerged except for her nose and mouth. Struggling, she took her last deep breaths; fighting the current trying to grab the oxygen in the air above. She looks up at the sky; the moon, the stars, and the darkness surrounding them. At that moment, she spots a shooting star trailing at the speed of light across the sky. She smiles as she releases every muscle and sinks into the deep abyss. She watches as the moon is a blur in the ripples of the water. The transparent water shining a spotlight on her as she sinks deeper and deeper. Losing the will to swim back to the surface. Darkness begins to seep in as she closes her eyes. She lets the sounds of the water comfort her as she lets go of everything. Her body drifting away slowly into the distance; into the beautiful sunrise of tomorrow. .
